The working principle of vortex flowmeter can be clearly expressed and summarized as follows:
I. Basic principle
The vortex flowmeter is a volume flowmeter that measures the volume flow rate, standard volume flow rate or mass flow rate
of gas, steam or liquid based on the Karman vortex principle. It uses the principle of natural oscillation of fluid to insert a
non-streamlined column (usually a triangular prism-shaped vortex generator) into the flowing fluid. When the fluid passes through
the vortex generator, two rows of alternating vortices with opposite directions will be generated behind the vortex generator, namely
the Karman vortex.
II. Vortex generation and frequency
Vortex generation: When the fluid flows through the vortex generator perpendicular to the flow direction of the fluid at a sufficiently
large flow rate, if the geometric size of the vortex generator is appropriate, two rows of neatly arranged vortices with opposite directions
will be generated behind it.
Vortex frequency: The release frequency (f) of the vortex is related to the average velocity (v) of the fluid flowing through the vortex
generator and the characteristic width (d) of the vortex generator, which can be expressed by the following formula:
(f = \frac{St \cdot v}{d})
Wherein, St is the Strouhal number, a dimensionless number with a value range of 0.14 to 0.27.
III. Measurement and calculation
Measurement of vortex frequency: The vortex flowmeter detects the frequency of the vortex through a frequency detector.
Calculation of flow velocity and flow rate: The average velocity of the fluid can be calculated using the measured vortex frequency
and the known characteristic width of the vortex generator; then, the flow rate can be calculated using the cross-sectional area of the
fluid flowing through the vortex generator.
IV. Technical features
Small pressure loss, large measuring range, and high accuracy.
Almost unaffected by parameters such as fluid density, pressure, temperature, and viscosity.
No movable mechanical parts, high reliability, and low maintenance.
The instrument parameters can be stable for a long time and can operate within the operating temperature range of -20℃ to +250℃.
5. Application Scope
The vortex flowmeter is mainly used for flow measurement of industrial pipeline medium fluids, such as gas, liquid, steam and other media.
It is widely used in industries such as petrochemicals, metallurgy, textiles, urban construction, energy, as well as environmental monitoring,
water resources management and other fields.
