Open channel flowmeter is an instrument used to measure the flow of water in open channels (such as rivers, irrigation channels,
drainage ditches, etc.). According to its measurement principle, structure and application characteristics, open channel flowmeter
can be divided into many types. The following are some common types of open channel flowmeters:
1. Classification by measurement principle
Ultrasonic open channel flowmeter
Principle: Use the propagation time difference or phase difference of ultrasonic waves in the air to measure the water surface
height (liquid level), and combine the geometric dimensions of the channel (such as width, slope, etc.) to calculate the flow.
Features: Non-contact measurement, easy installation, suitable for a variety of channel shapes and flow ranges.
Technical parameters: wide measurement range, such as 0.1m³/h-99999.99m³/h (determined by different weirs); high liquid level
measurement accuracy; with a variety of power supply methods, such as 220V/24V/12V, battery power supply, solar power supply,
etc.; high protection level, such as display instrument IP66, probe IP68.
Doppler open channel flowmeter
Principle: Using the principle of Doppler effect, by transmitting and receiving ultrasonic signals reflected by tiny particles (such as
suspended matter and bubbles) in the water flow, the movement speed of these particles is measured, so as to deduce the average
speed of the water flow, and then calculate the flow rate in combination with the channel cross-sectional area.
Features: Suitable for measuring fluids containing solid particles or bubbles, with high measurement accuracy.
Technical parameters: wide water level measurement range, such as 0.02~3m, 0.02~10m; wide flow rate range, such as 0.03m/s~5.0m/s;
high measurement accuracy of the whole machine, such as system error ±3‰.
Multi-channel open channel flowmeter
Principle: Use multiple channels to measure water flow velocity at the same time, and improve measurement accuracy through data
processing.
Features: High measurement accuracy, suitable for occasions with high measurement accuracy requirements.
Technical parameters: high flow rate measurement accuracy, such as 1.0%; wide flow rate range, such as ±10m/s; large channel width
measurement range, such as 0.5~10 meters for time difference method.
2. Classification by installation method
Insertion open channel flowmeter
Features: Usually composed of measuring tube and measuring head, it can be easily installed in existing pipelines and adapt to fixed
pipelines of various calibers.
Fixed open channel flowmeter
Features: It consists of measuring slot and measuring head, with high measurement accuracy and stability, so it is more suitable for
large-scale water conservancy projects and important water supply areas.
3. Classification by measuring medium
Liquid open channel flowmeter
Composition: It consists of pipeline, weir, timer, etc., and is divided into closed and open types according to the type of liquid. The
closed type is suitable for measuring liquids with higher viscosity, and the open type is suitable for measuring liquids with stronger
fluidity.
Gas-liquid open channel flowmeter
Composition: It consists of pipeline, throttling device, pressure sensor, etc., and is divided into constant temperature difference and
mass flowmeter according to the different types of measured gas.
